Frequently asked questions

What is taken out of a US paycheck?

Federal income tax, Social Security (6.2% up to $184,500 in 2026), Medicare (1.45%, plus 0.9% above $200,000) and state income tax where it applies. California also withholds 1.3% for SDI.

How much is $100,000 after taxes in California?

For a single filer with the standard deduction it is about $72,800 a year, or roughly $6,070 a month, after federal tax, FICA, California income tax and SDI.

Does it include 401(k), health insurance or HSA contributions?

No. Pre-tax deductions lower your taxable income, so your real take-home pay will be lower than shown by the contribution, but your tax will also be a little lower.

Why is my paycheck different from this result?

Employers withhold per paycheck using IRS and state withholding tables, bonuses are withheld at flat rates, and benefits are deducted. Your final tax is settled when you file your return.

How accurate are the other countries?

Each country uses its 2026 income tax scale and employee social insurance rates for a single person without children. Regional taxes, church tax and allowances are not included, so treat it as a close estimate.
