How to use the formula generator
- Choose your spreadsheet. If your Excel is 2019 or older, formulas use only functions it has.
- Pick what you want to do and type your ranges and values. Text, numbers and cell references are handled for you.
- Copy the formula and paste it into a cell. Use the translator below to switch function names between languages.
Frequently asked questions
Does it work with Google Sheets?
Yes. Choose Google Sheets as the spreadsheet: the formulas use functions Google Sheets supports, such as XLOOKUP and TEXTJOIN.
Why does my Excel show #NAME?
Your Excel doesn’t know one of the functions, or the names are in a different language. Choose “Excel 2019 or older”, or set the function names to your Excel’s language.
When should I use “;” instead of “,”?
Excel in many European languages uses a semicolon between arguments and a decimal comma. If a pasted formula is rejected, switch the separator.
What does $ in A$2 mean?
It locks the row or column so the range stays the same when you copy the formula to other cells. Turn on “Lock ranges” for lookups and conditional sums.
