How to write a number in words
- Type the number or amount. Commas and spaces are fine, and a point or comma before the last one or two digits is read as the decimal mark.
- Choose the language and currency. Every common format appears at once — plain words, cheque format and uppercase.
- Copy the line you need into your cheque, invoice or contract.
Frequently asked questions
How do I write a cheque amount in words?
In the US, write the dollars in words and the cents as a fraction: “One thousand two hundred thirty-four and 56/100”. Start at the far left and draw a line after the words so nothing can be added.
Should I write “and” after hundred?
British English says “one hundred and five”; American cheques usually keep “and” only before the cents. Both versions are shown.
Why write amounts in words at all?
Words are harder to alter than digits, so cheques, contracts and receipts state the amount in words; if digits and words differ, the words usually prevail.
Which languages are supported?
English, Korean, Japanese, Spanish, German, French and Portuguese, each with its own currency and grammar rules.
