How to use the grade calculator
- Enter your current grade, the grade you want and how much the final exam counts.
- Read the score you need on the final.
- To find your current grade, enter each category's grade and weight in the weighted grade section.
How weighting works
Courses often count categories differently, for example homework 20%, quizzes 20%, midterm 25% and final 35%. Your grade is the sum of each category average times its weight.
Planning for the final
Knowing the score you need helps you decide how hard to study. If the needed score is above 100%, look for extra credit or a curve; if it is low, you can focus on other courses.
Letter grades and GPA
In the common US scale, A is 90β100, B 80β89, C 70β79, D 60β69 and F below 60. To turn letters into a GPA across courses, use the GPA calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How is the needed final score calculated?
Needed = (target β current Γ (1 β w)) Γ· w, where w is the final's weight as a decimal. With 85%, a 90% target and a 20% final, you need 110%.
How is a weighted grade calculated?
Multiply each grade by its weight, add them up and divide by the total weight.
What if the weights don't add up to 100?
The calculator divides by the total weight you entered, so it shows your average so far.
Which letter scale is used?
The common US scale: A 90+, B 80+, C 70+, D 60+, F below 60. Your school may use plus and minus grades.
