How it works

Text to speech uses the voices built into your device and browser. Choose a voice for your language and adjust the speed and pitch.

Uses

Listen to articles while doing something else, check how a script sounds, practise pronunciation in another language or proofread by ear.

Better voices

Microsoft Edge offers natural online voices for many languages. On phones, extra voices can be downloaded in the system settings.

Frequently asked questions

Is it free?

Yes. It uses the speech engine built into your browser, so there are no limits or sign-up.

Can I download the audio as MP3?

No. Browsers do not let web pages record the built-in voices, so the text can only be played.

Why are there different voices on each device?

Each operating system ships its own voices. Edge and Chrome also add online voices that often sound more natural.

Is my text sent anywhere?

With on-device voices, no. Some online voices in Chrome and Edge are processed by Google or Microsoft.
